Crystalline Icicles

Each piece in this collection has a modernist sensibility and a sculptural quality that breaks fresh ground in lighting design and is fitting to a variety of spaces and style preferences.

On exhibit will be Todd Bracher’s minimalist ‘Strandelier’ alongside the cunningly constructed, yet elusive, ‘Deconstruct’. The crystalline purity of nature is laid bare in ‘Crystalline Icicles’ by S Russell Groves, while Andre Kikoski’s ‘ReveaLED’ stuns with its otherworldly glow.

Stephen Burks’s ‘Inside/Out’ achieves a reductive elegance, as the expressionist ‘Crystal Empire’ surprises with its reinterpretation of the classic chandelier, harnessing crystal with leather strapping.

Also on view at the showroom will be the Schonbek 2012 Product Collection featuring both new products and line expansions across a range of traditionally rooted and for-today product categories. Of special note will be additions to the Ekaterina line.

A newly launched website, Barcode Gallery (barcodegallery.com) is letting users create customized and personalized pieces of modern art leveraging the QR barcode technology.

The end result is the creation of a ready-to-hang piece of colorful modern art that contains an embedded message that can be decoded by observers using camera-equipped smartphones.

Users with a camera-equipped smartphone, such as Apple’s iPhone, are able to use any number of free barcode scanning applications to decode the image.

The QR code used in Barcode Gallery’s products, is a 2-dimensional barcode format that utilizes a pattern of boxes and squares to encode the message contents. While barcodes have been traditionally black and white, today’s camera-based scanning applications are able to decode multicolored barcodes that have an acceptable level of contrast.

Additionally, customers may choose to have their art produced on ready-to-hang canvas or on ready-to-frame archival paper in sizes ranging from 10-inch to 40-inch square.

What makes this art unique is the ability to encode a text message into the artwork itself, which is only revealed when scanned by a smartphone. Barcode Gallery allows up to 300 characters of text providing the opportunity to embed a favorite quote, poem, or personal message.

Which is all very good. The least we could do for our planet and the posterity, I must say.

But then, designer Ariel Rojo gets creative and thinks a bit ahead, and comes up with a reusable water toilet. You read it right — a reusable water toilet that can save up to 83 per cent of the normal water consumption by a toilet.

As they say, all great ideas are simple, so is Tlalokc… that is the name for the toilet.

What happens to the water you use when you was your hands? It drains away right? Wrong — not if you’re using Tlalokc. The water just fills in the toilet tank to fill up to the level. Similar to a two-in-one concept, and extremely ‘out of the box’!

Rojo came up with this one when he discovered that a dripping tap can waste of up to 2,000 liters of water per year, and a toilet consumes 4380 liters per year.

And the decor factor? Tlalokc comes up to the level there, too… stylish, design, easy on the eyes.

A great way to look hip while saving the planet!

What’s a ‘Tlalokc’, anyway? Why that name? Well, perhaps Wikipedia can explain that to some extent…

was an important deity in Aztec religion, a god of rain, fertility, and water. He was a beneficent god who gave life and sustenance, but he was also feared for his ability to send hail, thunder and lightning, and for being the lord of the powerful element of water.

Cloud sofa

Obviously, the cloud is a sofa concept designed sheerly for comfort, relaxation and fun.

The soft floating upper part is supported by the magnetic force generated by the bottom base, and actually levitates. You could sit and work, too, as if you would. Perfect for that lunch break power nap, I’d say.

Then again, what if you were on 78th floor and so looking forward to your nap and couldn’t tell between the cloud outside the window and the one in your office?

While the wall flats can be used in a bathroom or kitchen, they cannot come into direct contact with water or be in a room with excessive and repetitive steam. One way to avoid this is painting them with an appropriate waterproof paint.

Here’s what Koskinen has to say on the design: “The basic idea was to create a lamp series with space and atmosphere. The lamps are at their best in the late evening, creating a cosy mood around them.”

That it does, definitely, though the cord sort of sticks out.
